After lunch we visited the Chapel of the Sisters of Loretto (now operated by the city). It houses the famous staircase built by St Joseph himself. The Sisters couldn't find anyone who could design a staircase to the choir loft in their tiny chapel that didn't take up too much space. They began a novena to St Joseph. At the end of the novena a carpenter came to town and built the staircase for them, using no nails. Then he disappeared without asking payment for his materials or his six months' labor. The staircase has 33 stairs and no central support. It originally had no railing but the Sisters found it quite frightening so they added the banister about nine years later. It is a pretty amazing story.
