Chapter Four: In which the news reaches the music office

"Jawohl?"
"Tim?"
"Oh, it's you. How may I be of service, O pastor my pastor?"
"Got a question for you. Have you ever performed for a Pope?"
"Yes. Only three times, alas... twice for JP2 and once for B16. On our pilgrimages to Rome."
"Oh, yeah."

To make a long story short, Father Joe told him. "Mum's the word."
"Of course."
"Don't tell anyone."
Even before he hung up the phone Dr Furey knew precisely what needed to happen. It posed massive logistical challenges, of course, but wasn't that the point? To his way of thinking "simple" and "easy" were polite ways of saying "boring" and "predictable."

The story begins

You can see that this story is only loosely based on my own experience. I mean, their Cathedral is gothic.

Happy Advent

Tomorrow we begin the season of Advent. For my Advent project this year I have decided to do a novel in pictures. Any resemblance to actual persons is highly unlikely and almost certainly accidental. I am not that good at drawing.

A happy Thanksgiving

We had a lovely Thanksgiving in Redmond.  We got to play Stinky Skunk (aka Old Maid) with Z.  She thinks that the person who has the Stinky Skunk wins.

J and D had a designated place for political conversations.  Maximum capacity: one.

And Zizi made place cards for everyone. Her Es are positively runic.

Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving, too, blog-readers!

Dinner by candlelight

Thanks to Blue Apron, we had a delicious mini-Thanksgiving on the night before Thanksgiving.

Belated garden tour

I went out to do some raking and found a few surprises in the garden. The cosmos we planted are going strong, and there are about 2,000 bright red apples on the tree and another 5,000 on the ground.

In Olympia

I am doing a presentation on the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony. I hope a few more people come.

A quick trip to Portland

We took a quick trip to Portland to meet our new nephew, Carter!

Carter looks exactly, precisely like Cash at the same age.

Our efforts to get the two of them into the same picture ran into some challenges.

At the SU Gala

For years we have heard about the glamour and extravagance of the SU Gala. This year we were able to go and the rumors were all true. There was an ICE BAR. And individual ICE SCULPTURES for each person containing a tiny scoop of ice cream. It was really something.

At Calvary

Today we went out to Calvary Cemetery for the blessing of a new monument at the Casey plot, which features an image of Venerable Solanus Casey, the only member of the family (so far) whose cause has been introduced for sainthood. There is a great statue of Solanus on one side, and a picture of the vast Casey family on the other.

Father Ryan greeting a Capuchin priest and brother who came from Father Solanus's monastery in Detroit. Sister Anne calls them "the Caps."

Neither rain nor mud can deter a truly dedicated bagpiper.

I am not used to working under these conditions.

All Souls Day

Introit for the Requiem Mass we saw on our recent travels, complete with death and burial of a monk.
