St Cuthbert's Cave

Today's walk took us to St Cuthbert's Cave, which is an amazing place. It is tucked into a valley and surrounded by pine forests. Cuthbert is supposed to have lived here as a hermit for a while. Later, when the Vikings raided Lindisfarne, the monks fled with the saint's body and concealed it in the cave for a while before eventually taking it to Melrose and finally to Durham.

The glen is full of massive boulders that look for all the world like trolls that got frozen when the sun came up. It was impossible not to quote Tolkien excessively all day long.
