Happy birthday, Mary Shelley

Last night we celebrated Mary Shelley's birthday in style. Chris made an amazing Italian wedding cake in her honor.

Chris and Rebecca have a surprisingly large Frankenstein collection.

We had a lovely dinner and read favorite passages from the book. As always there was a parlor game, which was to make the perfect human being from scratch. Each of us tackled one part.

The finished creation is just like Frankenstein only more so.

Happy birthday, Mary Shelley!

Smithlin Dinner

Tonight was the night of the Smithlin gala. It was part one of two, since E is still coding at Google for another week. However, there were medieval place cards...

And a proper English summer pudding.

Christina is off to Glasgow on Labor Day!

Tonight's parlor game: Anglo-Saxon riddles in modern English.  C and D discovered quite a talent for coming up with them.

"Stuffed with salmon, we wrote our riddles, / Fearless of failure or feeling like fools. / Guesses we gave, alliterating always."  I think that passage is recorded in the Exeter Book.

More Shakespeare in the park

Tonight we went to Merry Wives of Windsor at Volunteer Park. While Falstaff drank sack and wooed Mistress Page, a guy sitting near us wooed his girlfriend with tales of how drunk he had been on various occasions.

In Redmond

Zizi is eating a pop-pop while wearing a pop-pop T-shirt. She is still our pop-pop girl.

At Choir Camp

Choir Camp is underway! Yesterday Christina the Astonishing dusted off her old tour guide skills for the campers.

And her fiddle skills left them completely gobsmacked.

Now the kids are singing songs around the Mary statue.

A birthday

Yesterday we celebrated Sage's first birthday! Aunties love him.

So does Zizi. In fact, she loves him to pieces. Not literally. At least, not quite literally.

The birthday theme... Bears! Sage makes a great baby bear.

With a fistful of cake.

Happy birthday, Sagey!

Accolades upon accolades

We got to catch up with our favorite Stanfordian and see the heaps of honors she had to lug back from California. In addition to the gold medal for her thesis, she got an engraved trowel from the Archaeology department. Only at Stanford...

A walk to Capitol Hill

Last night we went on a walk to Aunt Pauline's house. After more than fifty years, Joannamauselina's Aunt Pauline moved out of her Capitol Hill house and into a small apartment.

The house is enormous but probably didn't feel that enormous when there were two adults and six children living in it. The ground floor has a multitude of beautiful sitting rooms... Not pictured: actual inglenook fireplace.

The electric lady near the stairs is called "Printemps."

Original fresco decorations in one of the rooms:

We really hope someone buys it who wants to keep it almost exactly the way it is now.

Finally

It has been way too long since we did this.
