Climbing Nob Hill

We were planning to ride back up the hill but the streetcars were delayed. So we couldn't ride but we did take pictures.

Toiling up the hill.

One of the great things about SF is that there are views everywhere you look.

Flowers don't confine themselves to one or two seasons down here where it's sunny all the time.

Another hill, another amazing view.

More sights seen

Headed down one of the streets so steep they have steps cut into them...

Christina took a professional interest in the Fiddle motorcycle parked on Jones Street.

At Boudin's. She is making small sourdough turtles while a gigantic sourdough alligator and a bunch of tourists look on.

The ultimate tourist lunch. Delicious.

At Grace Cathedral

We started our day in the town at Grace Cathedral.

The church burned in 1906. There is a mural of priests and firemen rescuing the treasures from the burning and partly collapsed building.

Colored light on the altar rail.

Note the cushion on the cathedra.

A beautiful metal piece in some chancel or other.

It's great to have a visit with two of our favorite girls.

In San Francisco

We are spending a few days in San Francisco. It's quite nice here.

Busy days

The first week of Lent is pretty busy with Ash Wednesday, four Rites of Election, etc, etc, etc, so I haven't really had a moment to think of something to post. But on Saturday there was a rare overlapping visit from Zizi and Cash!

Friday night

Spending a delightful evening with two good-looking friends.

Felting

It turns out that if you give up TV for Lent you have plenty of time for needle-felting with the kitties. I haven't decided if this is a Wilkie Collins hero or a maître d' at a fancy restaurant.

In today's mail

I wrote a how-to book.

Fat Tuesday

We had a deluxe Fat Tuesday craft morning with P and J and Chris, who just retired. Someone didn't really want to be in the picture.

M's craft this time was Play-Doh Art, inspired by an Instagrammer we follow. Her Play-Doh seminarian copied from M. Sasek turned out really cute.

I am working on the Woman in White. Maybe I'll start a series of books called Crazy Classics.

Now it's off to Ash Wednesday Mass. Happy Lent, everyone.

At the NWFGS 2015

We went to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. Our favorite thing was non-floral: the cutest little vintage camping trailer ever.

In the garden

I think Punxatawney Phil was wrong about the six more weeks of winter. We really need a west coast groundhog prognosticator.

At Tutta Bella

In the words of Wallace Stevens, "whip / In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.... The only emperor is the emperor of ice cream."

Standing with the Sisters (and brothers and priests)

At the Noon Mass today, we had a special Mass for Consecrated Life. The different communities brought images of their founders, and Father Ryan got his picture taken with his mutual admiration society, the Carmelites.

Crafty time

After Liturgy Day this morning we spent the afternoon crafting with Karen. We were inspired to do some more needle-felting by today's Google "doodle" by our favorite needle-felters. M did Anne of Green Gables. My Mr Darcy is getting a new suit for Valentine's Day.

At the Celebration of Light

It was a beautiful celebration of light with our friend Peg being an honoree and making a speech, and our friends Lisa and Noelle featured in the video. And Father Ryan lost his voice, adding to the suspense and excitement of the evening.

At the Symphony

There is such a thing as being too close to the front.

Auntie heaven

Today I got to babysit Z for a while so her mommy could go to a doctor's appointment. She really liked her new bonnet which auntie brought her from Becky Thatcher's house in Hannibal, MO. Zizi had learned all kinds of new words and is very interested in fish at the moment. She can identify and say "clownfish," "lionfish," "sea snake," "whale," and others. She still loves pop-pops more than anything. She's SO great.

On Marion Street

I found a to-do list in a puddle on the way to Starbucks this afternoon. I don't think those shirts and jeans are ever going to get washed.

The big game

"Oh, somewhere in this favored land
The sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere,
And somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing,
And somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville —
Mighty Casey has struck out."

At 5:30 Mass

There are still a few seats available at Mass tonight. About 1,090 to be exact.
