At the 5 Spot

We are out for a late dinner at the 5 Spot with our dad who is visiting. He says "hello."

Another pop-up

This one is about a monkey and a tiger who set up a dentistry business.

At the UW

We went to the UW to have lunch with our friend Peggy. We got to see a cool show of 19th century pop-up books.

Tom again

Tom came to keep my feet warm. She makes it so hard to get to work on time.

At an Oscar Party

They are giving the award everyone is looking forward to - best live action short.

In the sacristy

Sometimes we let the servers who arrive really early use the sacristy computer. It's always something different. Today, a flying saucer dropped an alien on top of the Space Needle.

At Killarney Way

Our friends became Associates of the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace this afternoon. Congratulations, Sister Max and Sister Kathy!

At the Rito de Eleccion

We have the Rite of Election today, entirely in Spanish. The other difference is that Isaac is going to be Carolyn, I'm going to be Tony, and Brenda is going to be me. It's complicated.

In the Chapel

There is a weird/interesting/strange sculpture in the Chapel for Lent. I haven't decided what I think yet.

Ash Wednesday

I think our grocery store may not be aware that Ash Wednesday is pretty different from Easter Sunday.

Mardi gras

We are observing Mardi gras by burning the palms and eating cream puffs.

Hellebore

I just learned that the flowers on the east end of the Cathedral are called "hellebores," and that the old name for them is "Lent roses," because of when they bloom. The timing is pretty good this year.

A preview

Today we got to visit the studio of the artist who is creating the new statue of Blessed John XXIII. Pretty cool.

At home

Yes, I am at home drinking orange juice instead of finding out what becomes of the denizens of Downton. Not quite the evening I was looking forward to.

At home

I am home sick today with a sore throat that will hopefully be gone tomorrow. However, I am reading "North and South," which is very interesting. The rough men of the mill town greet the poor heroine with catcalls and remarks like, "your bonny face, my lass, makes the day look brighter." How rude.

Photo shoot

Today the Progress did a photo shoot for a special feature on confession. Father Ward was very convincing in his role as the priest.

In the garden

Camellias 1 and 2 have opened.

Our elected representatives

It's amazing how laws ever get passed when the whole process seems to move about as quickly as... as... I'm not sure what but you get the idea.

At Advocacy Day

There is a big crowd here from 50 different parishes. I am really glad that Father Zender also lives in the 11th District because I really don't want to have to make any speeches.

In Olympia

We are at St Michael's in Olympia for Catholic Advocacy Day. St Michael's is quite the megaplex with church, hall, school, giant parking lots, playfields, etc. even the font is enormous, easily able to accommodate the pastor and the entire RCIA team, not to mention the candidate for baptism.

At Skyline

Jack and Rose invited us over for Valentine's Day dinner. This delicious red velvet cupcake was reserved for me.

Happy Valentine's Day

According to an article in this morning's New York Times, educated, unmarried women live longer and happier lives than anyone else. (?!) A good message for today, since Tom declined to be my Valentine.

Mom is home!

Mom finally came home from Mexico, where she has been for the past three weeks. We missed her but at least she had plenty of time to pick out some great souvenirs for us.

At Sugar

We are going to eat one of these whoopie pies. We've got nothing to lose, right? And only a pound or two to gain.

At the NWFGS

We went to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show after Mass. They had a live Twitter feed on a screen, with messages that looked like this: "Going to the #NWFGS. Hope this shows up on the live Twitter feed!" Has anyone figured out Twitter yet, or is it really as meaningless as it seems to be?

Valentine's Day in the sacristy

Delicious chocolates, married to immortal verse.

At the Liturgical Ministries Institute

I'm off to teach a class on the liturgical year this morning. The class is supposed to be four hours long. I'm not sure if I can make a year last four hours.

A game of Hoopla

John and Dana came over for dinner and games and many jokes about Star Wars, Episode I.

Tom and her chores

It looks like Tom enjoys doing the dishes even more than I do.

Secret Admirers

Today, we heard from two secret admirers. First some flowers mysteriously appeared for M.

Then, we went to a staff lunch which an anonymous parishioner gave as a gift, donating her Christmas bonus.

Thanks, nice nameless people!

Miss Betsey Trotwood

Everyone is like some Dickens character or other. Joanna is Betsey Trotwood, of course.  (Read more at the famous Joannamauselina blog!)

At a meeting of the Pickwick Club

Joanna came over to celebrate Dickens' birthday. We meant to have foods mentioned in Dickens, but most of the meals are pretty unappetizing (Oliver Twist, Miss Havisham, etc) so we had high tea instead.

In our backyard

I guess we must have done something right when we planted all those bulbs last fall.

DIY, Cathedral style

Today we got to paint, pound, and glue. Unfortunately I can't show you the "after" pictures for a few months.

At Downton Abbey

I think the world is divided into three kinds of people: people who go to Super Bowl parties, people who go to Downton Abbey parties, and people who don't like parties.

A walk through the neighborhood

We went for a warm winter walk to Jefferson Park. We believe this house to be one of the few surviving examples of the Beacon Hill Georgian revival.

At Seattle U

We went to the "Search for Meaning" conference at Seattle U to hear Fr Jim Martin speak. He really knows how to get the most out of an anecdote. Which is probably why they got Father Ryan to introduce him.

At the Choir Festival

It's amazing how many kids are inside singing on a day like this.

In 3D

We went to Hugo in 3D. We all looked really good in the glasses.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

At Home Depot

These may look like ordinary colors, but they are not. They are from the Disney line and include such colors as "Jasmine's Gems," "Tigger's Tummy," "Buzz Blaster Blue," "Cinderella's Glass Slipper," and "Mickey's Gloves."

Tom and Hairy

With the whole house to choose from, the only place Hairy wanted was the place where Tom was already sleeping.
