Ringing out the old

We decided to celebrate New Year's Eve in style with a candlelight dinner. It was just spaghetti and salad, but still, there was candlelight. Happy New Year, e-readers.

Before and after

Our friend Kathy gave us some delicious homemade cookie mix. We added an egg, some butter, and a teaspoon of vanilla, and they turned into the most delicious cookies ever. Thanks, Kathy!

A night in Greenwood

We are at the Taproot Theatre for a show that is half Sherlock Holmes, half A Christmas Carol. It's weirdly interesting.

An evening with Zephyr

Zephyr and her mom and dad came over for a late Christmas. Zephyr was really interested in FaceTime with Aunt Becky and Uncle Matt, but she wasn't so sure about the reindeer antlers.

More Christmas pics

Maria took the pictures off her real camera today, so here, a bit belated, are a few more shots.

No tea party is complete without a craft project.  We made shrinky-dink ornaments with the girls.  Here's our magnificent work, before going into the oven.

After shrinking in the oven, they became very dinky. Maybe that's why they call them shrinky-dinks.

Here's the hawk that suddenly appeared in our apple tree!  Quite majestic.

And here's our dear Hairy after all the festivities were over.

M suggested that we use this photo for our Christmas card next year, with the caption, "Have yourself a Hairy little Christmas."  Seems like a great idea to me.

A cozy Christmas

It was a lovely Christmas! We got cozy tea-cosies... beautiful Christmas cards... one-of-a-kind lip balm... and lots of other things besides. Hope you all got as many presents as Tom and Hairy!

Time for presents

I can't believe the book father and Sandra found for me (and Zephyr) for Christmas. Corinna is an elf slash electrical engineering student who fixes a downed power line so Santa can deliver presents. (???)

Christmas tea

We always played at tea parties when we were kids and it turns out it's even more fun with real tea and real cucumber sandwiches! Here's our Norman Rockwell shot, before we dived in. We didn't have country dances, blind man's bluff, or "yes or no" but other than that it was pretty much like the party at the end of "A Christmas Carol": "Wonderful party, wonderful games, wonderful unanimity, won-der-ful happiness!" Merry Christmas, all!

A new puppy

Mom is thinking of adopting this puppy. Her name is Posey and she is half pit bull and half terrier. She had to get stitches on her head after a big dog didn't think her playful ways were amusing. The only problem with her is that she might weigh 90 pounds someday...

Catholic cookies

They will stop at nothing to get those Catholics to come home.

At Scrooge and Marley's

Peter is taking us to A Christmas Carol at the ACT Theatre for our Christmas present. We are pretty excited.

Christmas, early

Maria got me an iPhone 4S for Christmas and I opened it early. This post is actually being written by Siri. She is taking over my life.

Carolers

The Hallmark Christmas carolers are spreading their cheer all over the city. Last night they appeared in Lake Forest Park and tonight they are caroling in the Central District.

More views of the Keeper's cottage

The living room was beautiful, including a tree with vintage ornaments...

...Christmas books old and new...

...cozy nooks....

...and countless mementos of many years in ministry.  Pretty cool.

Dinner with the Keeper

We got to meet the famous Lady Alice...

...and Lord Cecil.

At one point, shortly after the appearance of the chicken, Lady Alice had to be removed from the table. She was not amused.

The sequel

Part 2 has a very happy ending.

At Readings and Carols

This is the best picture I got tonight. But it was a charming and lovely evening.

At a St Lucy's day party

This afternoon we went to Redmond for the annual St Lucia party at the Smith residence. There were tons of people there but somehow none of them showed up in the pictures. Maybe because none of the others had white dresses, red sashes, and crowns of candles. Sweetness and light.

Home scene with kitty

Hairy is the handsomest, but Tommie is definitely the prettiest.

A day for parols

Today we had our annual celebration of Simbang Gabi, marking the beginning of the Filipino Advent novena. This parol-bearer definitely needs to get a bigger umbrella next year.

Sophia's baptismal dress

A baptism

Today we had a very special baptism for Sophia Grace! The childrens' choirs sang and lots of Sophia's friends were there to celebrate with her.

View from my window

There's something wrong with this picture...

Rectory oratory

Isn't it simple and lovely?

On December 12

It is 12/12/12 today. At 12:12 and 12 seconds precisely... I completely forgot to look at my watch, clock, or any other timepiece.

Christmas cards

Tonight we listened to a beautiful Christmas album featuring our friend Bethie (it's called "Silent Night" and the ensemble is called Seraphic Fire) and wrote our Christmas cards. The music was great. The cards, on the other hand.... Let's just say that if you can't read our handwriting, you're not really missing anything original or interesting.

In hardhats

Today we got a tour of the new parish offices at Christ our Hope. It's really coming together.

...and after

Here is the shrinky-dink, shrunk. We made some with a few favorite authors and wrote quotes from each of them on the back.

As it turns out, the colors get darker as the shrinky-dink shrinks, so with the next round we will lighten them up before putting them in the oven. Still, I think they turned out cute.

Holiday craftiness

We (ie M) made some shrinky-dink Christmas ornaments. Behold the before shot, with the soda can included for scale.

Still in Redmond

M spotted this amazing illuminated tree near the Redmond fire department/city hall.

More from Temple de Hirsch Sinai

In the lobby they have great displays of historic items - this time, children's books including the classic, The Kiddush Cup Who Hated Wine.
