At Carmel again

Today we went to Shoreline to drop off some cards Maria made for them. Hanging outside the St Teresa speak room is this drawing of the beatification of St Therese. I love the way they have Therese dropping flowers on the Duomo of Florence instead of St Peter's.

End of the summer

...compared to after. I guess grape vines like cold, rainy summers.

Beginning of the summer

I sorted through my photos to make room for Paris, London, and Rome. I couldn't help but notice how different this looked before...

Evening in Cranford

M has a sore throat today so she is taking Airborne, drinking tea, and watching Cranford. I'm sure she'll be better in no time.

Deuteronomy 14:21

Today we went to Kline-Galland nursing home where Carolyn is getting accustomed to her new knee. It's a Jewish facility as you can tell from the sign on the fridge.

Fall scene

There are lots of bright colors in our backyard today.

See you later, Tom

Poor old Spooky

Sister Judy told us the sad story of Spooky Ryan. Spooky was so dearly loved by three young Ryans that she was almost pulled to pieces. Then, one day, Spooky seized her opportunity to escape into the wilds of Queen Anne and was never heard from again.

Happy birthday, dear Blessed

Sister Judy came over for dinner and to meet Tom and Hairy. After dinner, she and Maria planned a 200th birthday celebration for Blessed Marie Rose Durocher.

100 Years of Maryknoll

Today was the long-anticipated and long-planned Centennial of the Maryknoll Society. We had some extra-special guest servers...

...and a guest homilist. All in all, a great celebration of the great work of Maryknoll.  As an added bonus, it was the last big thing I needed to finish before vacation.  One more week!

Still at Oktoberfest

How do you say "photo op" in German?

In old Bavaria

We stopped by the best Oktoberfest west of Bavaria.

Liturgy Day

I can't even believe how many photocopies I made for Liturgy Day this year. It's practically a whole forest. Or at least a copse or maybe a hedgerow.

Hogging the remote

There goes Tom, acting like a boy again.

In chic Montlake

We're having dinner at Cafe Lago. We got a $100 gift card in the Great American Gift Grab at the golf tournament!

Remains of the day

I was the only person to bid on the 1950s 18th century figurines. Is it possible they're not as cute as I think they are?

The ducks of Inglewood were getting shooed out of the clubhouse all morning. They must have let their membership expire.

At Inglewood

It's really quite lovely here.

Golf weather

Looks like the perfect day for the golf tournament. Thanks, St Andrew!

Server training

We have a great bunch of servers. And this is only about half of them!

More dog lovers

I hope Cyrus, Callie, and Dash aren't too jealous.

Dog lovers

Two die-hard dog lovers came over for dinner. Tom was putting on a pretty good show.

Clean laundry

Nature red in tooth and claw

I used to think Tennyson was talking about lions and tigers. But after a morning of yard work, I started to think he might have been referring to blackberry bushes.

Scrabbling with friends

Becky and Matt came for dinner, ice cream, and Scrabble. Fun!

Luminous mystery

Sister Ly brought Maria this illuminated image of Our Lady of Lavang from Vietnam. She changes color every 5 seconds.

The twins

They are so lovable and cuddly.

Salmon season

The other day our neighbor brought us a freshly-caught salmon. We barbecued it yesterday with brown sugar. Today we used the rest to make salmon fettuccine alfredo. It turned out extremely delicious. Thanks, neighbor.

A different kind of wedding

In this afternoon's wedding, the bride was Catholic and the groom was Jewish.  In order to honor the traditions of the groom's family, the vows took place under a "chuppah," a special canopy which represents the home the couple will build together (cf. Wikipedia).  At the end the groom smashed the cup (safely enclosed in a bag) which is said to signify the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem (according to M, who probably read it on Wikipedia).  Then everyone yells, "Mazel tov!"  It was a cool wedding.

Sunset from Skyline

I guess that's why they call it Skyline.

Parks and recreation

Today we went to Saint Edward State Park for a special ceremony marking the unveiling of three interpretive signs about the history of the place. Father Ryan was the guest speaker. He wowed them with his delightful anecdotes of life at the seminary. Of course.

A lucky find

Mom got this Balinese puppet at an estate sale for $8. !!!

More Tom

Tom loves things that sparkle. In this case, the sun reflecting off a cup of tea.

So famous

Tom was really excited to see herself on her new friend Joanna's blog.

Tonight I am going to try making plum crumble with the plums from our tree.

A vision

Tonight we went to a potluck of the vision committee. I am not a member, but I am related to one so I was able to attend. There were so many babies there that the big people were practically outnumbered. There was Vincent (age about 3 weeks), Alexander Joseph (age 4 months), Ella (age 6 months), and Anneliese (age 15 months). The cuteness in the room was almost overpowering.

An interesting variation on an old favorite

Eavan's sandwich consisted of broken potato chips, a slice of cheese, and two pieces of bread. I guess that's all a growing girl really needs. ???

Even more friends

Hairy and Tom's new friends Max and Kathy brought them some lovely new dishes. Tom thought it would be fair if she had the one with the food and Hairy had the one with the water. Poor Hairy.

More new friends

Tom(asina) was a very good hostess when Joanna came for dinner. She made sure she couldn't get up from the table or even play her Scrabble letters without noticing her.

A really great word

It was hard to get Hairy to sit still on the Scrabble board.

Another new acquisition

We did like the masked man, however, also a recent purchase. We noticed that the giant reaper made of glass bottles isn't there anymore. I just hope that they put him in the recycle bin, not the trash.

Got art?

We went down to the SAM where this painting is on display among the new acquisitions. I just hope they didn't pay more than $25 for it.
