Tom kitty

We decided to call Tom Tom even though she's a girl. It can be short for Thomasina or Tomboy.

It's very ironic, because our last kitty was named "Captain Nancy Blackett" (see Swallows and Amazons). But the name never stuck so we just called her "kitty" instead. We would have been thrilled to discover that she was a boy so as to have a chance to come up with a name that would stick. This time, we like the name Tom so much that we're not going to change it. She will be just like Mr Mistoffelees, the conjuring cat.

A visit to Carmel

Tonight we went out to Carmel to help the sisters with a project. We looked at a funny comic book about being a postulant at Carmel.

Breaking veterinary news

TOM IS A GIRL!!!?!!!

At Four Paws

Tom and Hairy are getting their shots today. They are trying not to be scared.

In Columbia City

We had dinner with Stephen at Tutta Bella in Columbia City. It was sublimely delicious.

In the garden

The peonies, daisies, and lilies are gone, but the roses are still blooming. Pay no attention to the bite marks in the foliage.

Hairy loves iPhones - clawing your fingers off of them, sleeping on them, you name it.

Another conquest

Becky came over for dinner. She and Tom really hit it off.

Staff picnic

After the visit to the art studio we headed to Lincoln Park for the annual staff picnic. We had a scavenger hunt around the park. Our team found the driftwood orca.

At an artist's studio

After our lovely lunch, we stopped by the cool art studio of a parishioner who is donating a portrait sitting for the golf tournament. She did a portrait of Father Ryan, but you will have to come to the golf dinner to see it.

A day of adventures

This was a busy day... After the funeral this morning Christina, who has been interning all summer at the Cathedral, came over to meet the kitties. They loved her! Of course.

Kitties. Again.

M brought her good camera home the other day and took pictures of the kitties.  I just had to post a tiny sampling of the cute ones.

Totally quajaxed

We invented a new word, quajax (also spelled quajex). It means to beat someone really definitively at Scrabble.

Outside the Cathedral

This taxi was waiting to pick someone up after a funeral this afternoon. ???

At Chandler's

If you don't eat the crabs, they will eat each other.

Bunk beds

The kitties like the wicker cat bed mom got them.

At the Choir Camp concert

The kids are doing really well.

In Issaquah

We went out to St Joseph in Issaquah to visit Father Todd Strange, who was just assigned there. He likes it a lot. I thought I should document the occasion, because it's not every day a priest makes you a cheeseburger.

Sunset from Jefferson Park

We tore ourselves away from the kittens long enough for an evening walk through Jefferson Park. It's lovely there.

This is Hairy Potter sitting on the couch watching TV.

Choir Camp, redux

The kids came and sang for the residents at Skyline. They were a big hi. Of course.

At the Sorrento

I feel so cosmopolitan drinking a cosmopolitan. Come to think of it, that's probably the derivation of the word cosmopolitan.

At the Spaghetti Factory

Dinner with Maggie and Bryan always has a few surprises...

More kittens

I apologize for posting yet another kitten photo.

Tape, construction paper, and Renaissance angel cutouts? Must be time for Choir Camp.

Morning people

Tom and Hairy's secret admirer (mom) dropped off some toys for them. They love playing with them, even before breakfast on Saturday morning.

Tom and Hairy were wrestling on the stairs. There was a lot of scrabbling and tumbling.

Kitty Gymnastics

Will he be able to stick the landing?

Seagull update

The fledgling seagull is still distracting me at 3-second intervals.

From Joanna's Kitchen

That's my suggestion for the title of the cooking show Joanna will host some day.

More from the garden

We have two house guests this week who may become permanent residents. (Grandma said we could return them if they don't start liking us pretty soon.) They are brothers who are scared of their own shadows, and absolutely terrified of anyone else's. We are thinking of naming them Tom Kitten and Hairy Potter. Please suggest other names if any come to mind. We really hope to find names that stick to the animals this time around.

At O'Dea

I went over to O'Dea to talk through the liturgies for the coming year. The halls were empty and smelled of fresh wax. Not for long.

I am reading "Persuasion" on my iPhone. Everyone is worried about who is in love with whom.

Lewis the living lexicon

Max won at Scrabble. Of course.

A distracted afternoon

A baby seagull (pictured above) has been wandering around on the Cathedral roof all afternoon, making an unbelievable amount of noise. After about three hours, the mother returned to feed the creature. He's still there, but at least he's being quiet now.

An art installation

There were about 20 of these disposed about the opera house as if they were art.

At McCaw Hall

Tonight we went to see Porgy and Bess at the Seattle Opera. I never realized how weird the plot was. It makes "Lucia" and "Trovatore" seem almost realistic by comparison.

Adventures on Madison

There was lots of excitement on Madison with the pouring of concrete at the construction site. Some of the workers were wearing cement snowshoe-like contraptions on their legs, while one got to ride around in a cement-smoothing vehicle.

At the Elliott Bay Book Co

We walked over to the bookstore for lunch. They make gigantic lattes.
