Flaming bananas

We were far too stuffed to order dessert but were glad the people at the next table did. An impressive display.

At a fancy restaurant

We came into the uncharted territory of Bellevue to spend a gift certificate at John Howie steakhouse. There are items on the menu for $118. Gulp.

More P&P

We just got to the part where Lydia runs away with Wickham. It is as close to tragedy as Jane Austen ever got.

La mama mexicana

Mom is back from Mexico. She bought this beautiful painting, which is about four feet wide, in a little shop for a few pesos. She also brought us lots of cool souvenirs. We are so glad she's back.

In Chicago

Very, very briefly.

En route

On our way back to Chicago. When we arrived, Tennessee was really dark and haunted-looking, with weird mists hovering over the bare trees. As we leave, it's all sunshine on the bright snow and the cardinals are chirping in the branches. Tennessee seems to be happy we're leaving.

O'Charley's

On our way back to our hotel we stopped at O'Charley's for dessert and sangria.

Cable TV

One of the fun things about being in Springfield is watching cable TV. Now we're watching Rachel Maddow on the State of the Union address. She seems like a Smith grad, but I guess she went to Brown. Odd.

The house of smokers

This time I actually did recommend that he quit smoking in order to extend his life. But we still had to stop here on the way back from Nashville.

Snow in Athens

The Athens of the South, that is.

At the Parthenon

Now that's something you don't see every day.

Snow in Springfield

The guy at the car rental place talked us into upgrading to an SUV because snow was predicted. I guess he was right.

At Shoney's

We arrived too late for the breakfast buffet. "You can still order breakfast off the menu, but we just don't have no grits," said the waitress.

In Springfield

I once read that there is a Springfield in all 50 states. I think there may be a Hampton Inn in every Springfield. We are off for a drive through the olde town center.

Podcasting

A cultured friend recommended a BBC podcast entitled, "In Our Time." So I am listening to an interview with an expert on unicorns. (!)

En route

We are on our way to Nashville, TN. You know what big country-western music fanatics we are. It's a pilgrimage, really. We walked to the Beacon Hill lightrail station and took the train. It was very convenient. The art is a bit odd. At the Beacon Hill station there are giant microbes. At the Tukwila station, there are atomic particles. It's pretty clear that the farther you get from Seattle, the more you devolve.

Recipe for a lovely evening

Ice cream sundae + Pride and Prejudice.

Another birthday

Today we had another birthday - a Quinceanera. Cecilia is a really sweet girl.

Happy Birthday, dear Becky

Today B turned 25. Hard to believe. Her boyfriend Matt not only came up with one of the best presents for her, he made her a gluten-free cake.

Toy Story marathon

We are on movie 3 of our marathon. We think #2 is the best.

Chez Kathy

I can't believe I get to eat a piece of this delicious French country cheesecake.

On Capitol Hill

We had a nice gathering at Leontine House. It's a beautiful Tudor home with acres of shag carpet the same color as cookie monster.

Bebesitting

We are taking care of Becky's cat Bebe for a couple of weeks. She's cute but prickly.

The coziest tea-cozy in the world

Our friend Peggy made us a custom tea cozy that matches our kitchen! It makes a cup of tea on a cold day that much more cozy.

A scintillating evening

It's the annual staff Christmas party. Just in the nick of time.

More apps

We decided to have a Harry Potter (movie) marathon. The first one is a bit dull so we played with M's new app during the film. This one takes pictures and turns them into cartoons.

At Skyline

They have ice sculptures! Real ice sculptures! No need to rush over to see them, though, because at the rate we're going they won't melt any time soon.

1-1-11

The first sunset of 2011 was lovely. And mom's coming over for New Year's dinner. Fun!
