Movie night

We are watching Super 8 on John and Dana's giant screen.

Morning with the kitties

In the neighborhood

We stopped at MacPherson's, a Beacon Hill landmark. It is the gathering place for people of every race, language, and way of life, as the prayer used to say. The one thing we all have in common is the need for vegetables at low prices.

Another new acquisition

Inspired by Velasquez. Charming in a weird way.

At the SAM

We walked down to the SAM to see the new acquisitions - this is from the new "Visitation" by Philippe de Champaigne.

O the cuteness

Charlie met Hairy and Tom. They are the first kitties she has ever met.

Birthday girl

Charlotte, the fairy of England, descended on the Rectory today.

Close to the Sorrento, too

Father Ryan found this great postcard of the cathedral dedication with an inscription by a proud parishioner of yesteryear.

Christmas with the Holy Names

We had Christmas dinner at Sister Judy's house. They have a remarkable vintage Christmas tree that rotates once every minute, lights and all.

Almost done

The best thing about Vespers of Christmas is the historic cope, I think, which Bishop O'Dea wore at the cornerstone laying.  Or so we like to think.

A Christmas visit from a very tall man

Curtis is not used to seeing other people in his plane of vision.

It starts

They are already unloading the equipment for the TV broadcast. It is the eerie peace before the peace on earth.

In Olympic Manor

We drove through the most decorated subdivision in Seattle. The most amazing thing is that two or three houses are not decorated at all. I wonder if the owners are ostracized by the community.

Lunch at home

Joanna came for lunch and Tom and Hairy showed off by fighting over a Christmas tree. Tom won.

Happy birthday, dear Cathedral

Today is the 104th anniversary of dedication of St James, and the 17th anniversary of rededication.

Another decoration day

There are decorations going up everywhere. At Swedish Hospital there are about 21 Christmas trees in the lobby.

If the Stooges ever come out of retirement to do a Christmas picture, I have some great material for them.

Apparition

The Christmas angels have appeared in the Chapel in preparation for the coming days. They seem to be having an interesting conversation.

It's beginning to look, etc

Sleeping in, finnish tarts and eggnog lattes... It's like a whole Christmas vacation compressed into one morning off.

A winter walk

We went downtown to Fran's to order chocolates for Father Ryan's nieces and nephews. I'm pretty sure none of them read this blog, so I'm not spoiling anyone's Christmas surprise by divulging this information. We saw any number of blog worthy things, including an enormous flower pot outside the Sheraton, a sculpture by Tsutakawa, and a self-portrait in chocolates. And the display of historic teddy bears and buttons at Fox's gem shop.

At a baptism

Today the famous Abby was baptized. She did very well indeed. She stayed awake the whole time, and smiled more than she cried.

Kindred spirits

We introduced Ella to the Gerber baby. They really hit it off.

Thursday, December 15, 2011

At the Norton Building

We met an economist for lunch at the Harbor Club to talk business. We also talked about shooting raccoons with BB guns. It was a wide-ranging conversation.

Sorry

We had a delightful evening at Joanna's. We played Sculptorades, Hoopla, and Sorry. We knew before we started playing Sorry that Rachael would win. And she did. Nor did she seem at all sorry about it.

At the Tree Farm

We went to get our Christmas tree in the north end. In addition to the trees they have reindeer. There was only one, though - the other 7 must have been off on a special mission. This one did nothing but sneeze and drink water. Of course, they never do fly if you're watching them.

After we got our tree, we had dinner with P and J, who live one minute away. It was lovely. Thanks, P and J (and C, D, and C!).

At OLG

We went to lunch with Helen and had a tour of Our Lady of Guadalupe in West Seattle, where she is working now. They have a brand-new parish office and are building a new gym and parish center. She's doing great.

Decorating day

The tree isn't even up yet and Hairy is already being naughty.

Sneak peek

Today we signed off on the Christmas program covers. They will be pretty nice, if I do say so myself.

Santa's workshop

Some of the kids in Santa's workshop at Nordstrom are really excited. But others don't really want to meet Santa face-to-face. Or get dressed up. Or get their picture taken.

St Nicolas

Some of the servers were supers in Britten's St Nicolas. We took away Howard's vestments, gave them back, took them away again, and topped it all off with a gospel procession.

At Simbang Gabi

It would be impossible to have too many parols. I mean, wouldn't it?

Winter

We woke up this morning to find it was winter. Hence the Cathedral scarf and giant latte.

More kitties

I know this is almost the same picture I posted yesterday, but isn't it cute? Hairy is taking good care of Tom. They got fixed today so they are both pretty sedate tonight. And sedated.

Kitties

Tom and Hairy are being nice to each other tonight.

Simbang Gabi rehearsal

Simbang Gabi is so interesting that I don't understand how the rehearsal can be so boring.

Madre de las Americas

There were even more danzantes this year than in the past. I'm not sure what the story is on these guys... but I am sure there is one.

The beautiful people

We had dinner with these lovely people tonight. Guess who...

Sister Anne and friends

Sister Anne came by for gadget help. I got to meet her two laptops, her MP3 player, and her iPad 2.

From Amazon.com

It finally arrived and I love it, I just love it.

Cathedral sunset

The Cathedral looks even lovelier by sunset than at other times of day.

At SBUX

These plastic tree-like shapes, large red balls, and stylized holly leaves, along with the slogan "Let's merry," have marketing campaign written all over them. I must say that the skinny peppermint mocha is pretty good, however.

At Kafe Berlin

We are trying out the new restaurant on 9th. Yes, believe it or not, it's on 9th. Their grand opening isn't until Wednesday, so right now they only have pastries and coffee.

Advent

I am posting this picture of our front door because I do not have Internet this morning. Turns out there is not all that much I can do without it.

Finally

There were times I thought this moment would never come. But it finally did! We are in our TV room with the kitties, on our way to Mount Doom with stops along the way in Hobbiton, Rivendell, Rohan, and Gondor.

But hopefully not dies irae.

Thanksgiving Part II: leftovers

Because we couldn't all get together on Thanksgiving, everyone came over tonight and had leftovers. We also played a few rounds of Cloodle, Sculptorades, and other noisy games. The new arrangement in the living room worked great!

Tom and her sunbeam

With apologies to dog-lovers.

A happy Thanksgiving

This year we had Thanksgiving at mom's house. Every year we combine grandma's birthday (11/23) with Thanksgiving. Every year we give her a box of chocolates and every year she loves them. This year, we decided to give her a box of chocolates. It was a huge hit. Happy 88th birthday, grandma!

Unfortunately there's no app to close the cupboard door and wash the pots and pans, or there would be a nice clean countertop in the background. Some people wait till after dinner to do the dishes. Isn't that weird?

Happy Thanksgiving, Tom and Hairy

First course: Meow mix. Second course: chicken and liver medley. Mmmm.
